Ok, I’m just going to come right out and say it… Having a baby hurts, like really bad! Your vagina feels like its on fire for a good part of the next couple of weeks. You can’t sit, stand or walk for to long at a time, you can’t use the bathroom normal. I mean having a baby alone is hard work but I believe that postpartum recovery is equally as bad!
There isn’t much talk about how to care for your lady bits after having a baby. Which is totally crazy to me because it’s so important to take good care of your vagina after delivering a baby. Before I had my son my OB-GYN didn’t talk to me or warn me at all about postpartum care. So I was totally unprepared for what was to come for my body after having a baby.
That’s why I feel like I NEED to write this post. I would hate for another mother to be as unprepared as I was after having a baby.

How to care for your vagina after a vaginal birth
1. Avoid tampons
I feel like I don’t really need to add this one but you never know. You should avoid using tampons for at least 6 weeks after having a baby. But even then you may not be ready! It took me a good 8-10 weeks to use tampons again and even then it was still uncomfortable.
2. Ice pack or Padsicle
I so wish I knew about padsicles before having my son. I’ve heard only good things about them since and I can’t wait to use them next time. Pregnant chicken has a good recipe on how to make padsicles. Also ask your nurse to make you some for your hospital stay. One of the nurses I had during my hospital stay did it already for me and I totally love her for it.
3. Peri bottle
Who wants to save on their toilet paper bill? This is going to be your new best friend for the next couple weeks. Goodbye toilet paper hello water bath. I always made sure it was filled with warm water but you could fill it after each use so its at least room temperature before using it again.
4. Sitz bath
You can buy a fancy smancy sitz bath online that goes over your toilet, but its just as easy to fill your bathtub with just enough water to cover your hips or just enough to submerge your nether regions. Doing this a couple times a day to help clean and relieve some of the discomfort. Make sure your tub is thoroughly cleaned first to avoid getting an infection. You can also add soothing properties like baking soda or Epsom salt.
5. Pain relieving spray
I took the Dermoplast the hospital gave me and loved it.
6. Prenatal vitamins
Who said prenatals were just for pregnancy? They help give you all the vitamins, minerals and nutrients your body needs to recover after giving birth.
Sitting on a pillow or padded ring will help keep the pressure off your vagina.
8. Use a stool softener
Oh my god! Taking a number 2 after having a baby feels like your having a whole other baby! I dreaded this so much during my pregnancy and for good reason. The hospital will give you a stool softener but if your anything like me you cant swallow pills (sucks I know). So I didn’t take any after delivery and holy moly I was crying actual tears (I wonder if we can get an epidural for the number 2?).
9. Wear loose clothes
I already knew this one as I’m sure you all know but wearing anything to tight can add extra pressure to your bottom half. Which is the exact opposite of what you want!
10. Pain reliver
Keep a pain reliver close incase you get to uncomfortable but make sure its breastfeeding safe if that’s the route you are going.
This one is more of a pregnancy tip. Did you know doing regular kegels will make delivery easier therefor speeding up the recover process? Might be worth a try!
Life with kids is already stressful and exhausting and adding another munchkin is not easy. That’s why postpartum recovery is so important! It’s stressful, painful and exhausting, but its a must! Preparing ahead of time will help make the couple of weeks after birth easier on you and your body!
